It’s difficult to track down sunshine records but the Met Office give 166.8 hours for the North of England for August. I recorded just 137 hours for the month or approximately 82% of expected.

This is typical of the cloud cover we've had down on the plot this August.

Rainfall for the month seems to be dependant very much on location. It’s seemed a wet month but we’ve had only slightly over the average rainfall for August in Ossett. We’ve had lots of small amounts of rainfall which in the end have not been much use on the plot which at the moment is very dry. We had 18 days with rainfall of 0.2mm or more but of these 18 days only 6 days had 2mm or more. At the end of the month the rainfall total was 50.8mm compared with an expected total of 46.7mm

One thing that we haven’t missed down on the plot this year is the dreaded blight. I’m not entirely sure if this is a result of the cool weather conditions or just luck but fortunately it just hasn’t made an appearance this year so far. Most of my potato crop is harvested and not a sign of blight. This variety is Nadine the last roots lifted in August.

August 2010 Weather Summary

I’ll remember August as a cool month. Temperatures have been disappointing low and probably a couple of degrees below what we might expect. That seems to be the summary for the north of England throughout August. I’ve added a couple of links to other August weather summaries.
