March 2011 Descriptive Summary
Unlike February, March turned out to be a very dry month. I know I only started keeping records in October 2009 but February has turned out to be the driest month since I started these records with just 7.3mm of rainfall a mere 17% of average rainfall. However, this meant that the plot dried out well from its February soaking and towards the middle to end of the month the soils has been in excellent condition for digging. The excellent dry weather allowed us to tidy up much of the winter rubbish and get all the debris burnt ready for a fresh start this year.

Whilst March produced some beautiful sunny days as gardeners we need to be aware of the coldest nights as this can provide real set backs to young plants. Amazingly if you check out the graph of greenhouse temperature it’s easy to see that the low night time temperatures in March were as bad if not worse than those of February. This chart of greenhouse temperatures shows as many cold hours in March as February with the coldest nights occurring in March.
