By the 13th May we were heading towards a record low average temperature for May. May 1996 ranks as the 8th coldest since 1772 and we were in line to match or 'better' that record. The coldest May since 1772 is 1817 and the graph shows the comparisons for the 13th May this year.

It did create a difficult start to the growing season though with late frost damaging potatoes, fruit blossom and any other tender plants that thought May meant an end to cold and frosty nights.
May also turned out to be a very dry month which combined with cold frosty nights made for a difficult and slow start to the vegetable growing season. May 2010 Weather Summary
May turned out to be a month of extremes. Temperature wise it turned out (to steal from footballing terms) to be a month of two halves. The first half unseasonable cold followed by a second half to the month of unseasonable warmth with some days bordering on hot.
It's the time of year when the plot takes on a green and pleasant look and winter’s bleak look disappears. This is especially so of the areas planted up with perennials and trees and fruit bushes. The rush in growth of summer vegetables has still to take place.
