March began like the previous cold, winter months of January and February. The month started with some light snowfalls and some extremely frosty nights.

By the middle of the month temperatures were on the up and we began to emerge from the cold of winter. For a week and a half temperatures reached seasonal values and spring was in the air. Unfortunately towards the end of the month temperatures fell away again, although thankfully not to the bitter winter values. In the end March’s average temperature was slightly lower than the expected by about 0.5°C.

March was dry to begin with, a result of the cold, clear frosty weather. There were only three really wet days but these were sufficient to make up for the dry start and in the end we had slightly more than average rainfall for the month.

The improvement in the weather in the middle of the month meant that at last serious gardening on the plot could get underway. Flowers that we thought were never going to bloom proved us wrong. We head into April hoping for an improvement in temperatures as a busy month for gardeners gets underway.
