April started cold but then turned reasonably mild for a few days. This together with a very pleasant warm spell towards the end of the month resulted in the average temperatures for April about 0.5°C above the long term average but a little lower than last year. On the whole plenty of daytime temperatures were above expected values but this was offset by a good number of night time temperatures below expected levels.
April turned out to be a dry month with less than half the anticipated rainfall for the month. The total for the month was just 24.1mm, a couple of millimetres more than the 22.7mm of rainfall we had in one day on the 22nd February. However over the last six months the amount of rainfall is very close to average.
April sees the start of the blossom on fruit trees and bushes. It begins that worrying time of year when we wonder, "Will there be any blossom?" Then if there is, the hope that the blossom will survive any cold frosty nights. Unfortunately some of the flowers on our alpine strawberries did succumb to frost but they should keep flowering right through to the first frosts of autumn.
