February 2010 Weather Summary
February has followed in a similar pattern to the second part of December and January giving us another cold month with snow at times although not as much as January.
Snowfall on 21st February
The end of February marks the end of winter 2009/10 (for meteorlogical purposes). It’s been a cold winter, the coldest since 1985 based on my temperatures. Of course official figures may be different to mine as temperatures can vary considerable at different locations. There is little to choose between the winters of 1984/85 and 1981/82 with 1978/79 considerably colder.
Our cold spell started on the 17th December and since then temperatures have never recovered. We have suffered colder spells within the cold spell but no mild days to speak of. We’ve had an allotment since the mid 1980’s so it’s our coldest winter of plotting. Comparing my Ossett temperature mean of 2.7°C for December, January and February with the Hadley Centres central England Temperature figures it’s our coldest since 1984/85 which also recorded 2.7°C. The CET (Central England Temperatures) values for 1981/82 is 2.6 and 1978/79 is 1.6°C
