The rainfall for December was well below average at 27.6mm against a seasonal total of 73.4mm. Sunshine for the month was reported as above average. My weather station is situated in the shade for much of the day at this time of year. With the sun low in the sky our garden receives little sunshine even on the brightest sunny winter days.

December 2010 Weather Summary

December continued where November left off, very cold and snowy. There wasn’t much of a let up in the cold conditions as the cold weather remained for virtually the whole of the month.

At the beginning of the month it was not only cold but we’d plenty of snow on the ground too. A mild spell for a few days in the middle of the month allowed our snow to thaw but soon we returned to bitterly cold weather which only let up for the last few days of the month. Our garden’s low temperature was -10.3°C and with daytime temperatures remaining below freezing just about everything outside froze up. Our pond just about remained ice free where filtered running water returns to the pond.

By the time December came to an end it became the coldest December since 1890 placing it second in the list of coldest Decembers since 1772.
