February 2011 Descriptive Summary
General
February turned out to be a mild month with temperatures just a little above those expected. We had an exceptionally windy spell at the start of the month. It was a wet month with above average rainfall. Rainfall was recorded on 20 days in February.
The start of the month was very windy and I recorded our strongest gust of wind since setting up my weather station of 36.0mph on the 4th February unusually high in our sheltered sub urban garden.
In the greenhouse
It wasn’t a good month for getting on with preparing the plot but it was busy month for the arrival of new plants and making early preparations for the new season where possible. New raspberry and strawberry plants are potted up awaiting better weather for planting out as are our more unusual new fruits a Japanese Wineberry, Cobnut and self fertile Kiwi. New perennials have been potted up and are growing well. Onions, shallots and elephant garlic have been started off in pots, seed potatoes set to chit.
In the garden
In the garden the first signs of spring are appearing. The first of the years flowers are open, buds are swelling with promise for later in the season and bulbs are coming up by the dozen.
Down on the plot
On the plot it’s too wet to make preparations for the new season. The rain has put us off visiting except for a dash to harvest some vegetables. Even down on the plot signs of spring are showing with spring flowers putting on a display. The first of our rhubarb will soon be ready for harvesting too.
