March 2024 Video Diary

01 April 2024

We decided to risk planting our early potatoes. It’s certainly around our usual planting time but the ground is on the wet side due to the never ending showers. A couple of beds were prepared for planting but some were certainly too wet to work on. The forecast is for another week of showers so we thought we’d better make use of a dry afternoon.

Another wet day for Ruby’s walk but there are some signs spring is on the way.

It was another wet day when we took Ruby for a walk at Temple Newsam. Ruby doesn’t mind the rain if she’s getting a walk. There are signs that spring is gradually arriving. The daffodils were in full display and some trees had begun to flower. The grass is very wet and there’s plenty of mud about which Ruby is normally good at avoiding.

We haven’t done any planting or seed sowing at the allotment but we’ve made a start sowing seeds in our home greenhouse. So here’s a look around our greenhouse at home.

Certainly signs of spring in the air at Nostell Priory this week.

A decent afternoon so we decided to visit the allotment. After some morning showers, I was hoping it would stay dry so I could burn some rubbish. Before starting my fire I decided to do more work on the raspberry bed refurb by digging it over. Sue tidied up the strawberry beds removing lots of dead leaves and other debris. Sue collected lots of rubbish from around the plot so we could get it all burnt in one large bonfire.

It’s still too wet to do any soil preparation at the allotment after overnight rain on Saturday. However, there are plenty of other jobs to be done. I decided to start refurbishing one of our raspberry beds. The raspberries have become infested with bindweed and wick grass. It’s going to be a long job. Sue cut back our Old Gold raspberries and pruned a couple of our gooseberries as well as fitting in a bit of weeding.

This is part of our walking route around Nostell Priory which takes us around the main lake. The grounds on the opposite side of the lake are the formal gardens of the Priory.

We haven’t managed a trip to the allotment this week due to the poor weather. I have sown a few seeds and we’ve done a few jobs in the garden at home as described in this video on our walk around Temple Newsam.

03 March 2024

It was a dull cool Sunday afternoon when we visited the plot to get on with a few jobs.

We had a walk around Nostell Priory in the rain this week. Ruby still got a game chase on the lawn in front of the main house. She needed her legs washing and drying when she got back home. Once spruced up she was ready for her dinner.
