2024-01-27-Free bean poles, well almost. Coppicing hazelnut

Saturday afternoon saw us make our first visit to the plot to actually get some jobs done rather than just harvesting a few vegetables. It was also our first visit since storm Jocelyn so we had a quick look around to see if we had any damage.

Fortunately, we were damage free although once again our plot neighbour’s greenhouse had rolled onto our plot so the first job was to return it to the adjacent allotment. It was time to cut back our hazel tree which we coppice every few years for bean poles and pea sticks. It’s a job that needs doing before any birds decide to use the tree for nesting. The plan was that whilst I cut back the hazel Sue would cut back the buddleia bushes.

Everything was cut back and the hazel poles stacked ready for use through summer and the buddleia prunings were added to our pile of rubbish to be burnt as soon as we get a few dry days.

Sue also managed to find a few Brussels sprouts to pick before we left for home.

2024-01-19 Feeding frenzy – Frozen lake

A cold walk around Nostell Priory. The lake was frozen over. The swans were all gathered near the path along with lots of ducks. They didn't take a lot of persuading to tuck into some duck and goose seed.

A frozen lake but signs of spring on Ruby’s walk

It was a cold walk around Temple Newsam. Part of the small lake still had a covering of ice in the middle of the afternoon. However, there were a few signs that spring is on the way. At least the frosty ground meant it wasn’t muddy.

2024-01-13, More giant parsnips Brussels sprouts and cabbages – plus rolling a greenhouse

The forecast for the next week is for some cold weather so we decided to pay a visit to the allotment to see what we could find to harvest. On our last visit, we must have missed seeing that our plot neighbour’s greenhouse had blown onto our plot. The first job was to roll it back to where it belongs. We harvested some of our later sown parsnips. I didn’t expect much of them as they were planted in the middle of May which I consider very late for parsnips. You’ll see I was wrong. We also managed to find a couple of cabbages that might be okay and some Brussels sprouts.

Ruby surveys the storm damage at Nostell Priory

We had our first walk of the year around Nostell Priory on Thursday afternoon. The grounds had been closed due to the gale force winds of a few weeks ago. The main problem was that the gales had blown over some trees. As we walked around the estate we managed to see some of the damaged trees. There are still lots of very wet and muddy paths so we avoided our regular route.

Ruby’s birthday

The years fly by. It's Ruby's fourth birthday today 08 January 2024. No special birthday treats but we did take her for a very chilly walk in the park.

Heron and Egret at Temple Newsam

At Temple Newsam we often see a heron around the lake but this is the first time we have seen an egret around the lake as well.

At one of our regular walks around Temple Newsam Ruby got to meet up with one of the farm animals.

05 January 2024

We headed out to the allotment to see if we had any damage from the storms before Christmas. We also needed to see if we could find a few fresh vegetables. The wind had blown the covers from the brassicas and removed some weed control fabric but there was no damage to our shed or greenhouse. We decided to dig up some parsnips and leeks. The parsnips were chitted on damp paper and we thought that some had grown long roots before we planted them. Would they have formed multi forked roots?

Ruby’s muddy New Year’s Day walk

We decided on a New Year’s Day walk in the park with Ruby. We’ve had lots of rain during the last couple of weeks of December. At this time of year, the ground takes a long time to dry out. The paths and the path edges were very muddy but that didn’t bother Ruby until she got back home and needed her legs and feet washing.
