May 2023 Video Diary

For a change, we decided to take Ruby walking at Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire about an hour’s drive from home. We thought we might see some ducklings. There were also lots of rhododendrons which were in full bloom.

Some clips from our most recent visit to Nostell Priory. I think the trees are now looking their best as fresh new foliage emerges. Wildflowers are populating the undergrowth and grass and wildflowers are growing quickly in the meadow. Unfortunately, only six of the eight cygnets were still with their parents. Hopefully, the remaining six will all survive, the same as last year.

We are having a lovely spell of weather at the moment and we’ve been making the most of the good conditions to get the plot planted up.

It’s the time of the year when things change at the allotment very quickly. It’s a busy time sowing and planting as well as looking after newly planted crops. We haven’t even started protecting our fruit crops yet. At least all those bare beds are beginning to turn green.

We took Ruby for a walk at Temple Newsam this week. The azaleas were in flower but I’m not sure if they will look even better next week. In any case, I made a video just in case they are at their best.

We’d read that eight chicks had hatched on Wednesday 03 May so on Thursday 04 May we expected the chicks to be still in the nest and we didn’t expect to see them out on the lake with their parents. At first, we couldn’t get any good photos or videos as they were partially hidden in the reeds but we tracked them as they slowly made their way around the edge of the lake. We were rewarded with some lovely views of the cygnets.

The weather wasn’t too bad over the long Bank Holiday weekend and we made good progress at the allotment.

Following on from our allotment tour of a few days ago I thought I’d do a little tour of our home greenhouse and garden. For the next few weeks, the greenhouse will be continually changing as new plants move between the greenhouse, cold frame and garden or allotment.
