28 August 2023

After testing a cob of sweetcorn we decided it was time to harvest all the remaining cobs. The variety is Earliking.

26 August 2023

A look around part of our plot as we get towards the end of August. We have been working on this part of the plot over the last few days. Beds are emptying quickly giving the allotment a very autumnal look already matching the weather. We’ve still got plenty to harvest though and some crops will left in the ground well into winter. We will only harvest parsnips as and when we need them.

We decided to lift our onions and shallots to see if we could get them to dry out before taking them home to store over winter. I lifted some more potatoes while Sue eased the onions and shallots out of the ground.

After our disastrous Casablanca potato crop, I was hoping for something much better from our trial potato Sagitta. It’s a second early potato and one we’ve never grown before.

On Friday afternoon we made a quick trip to the allotment to harvest some vegetables. It was a case of picking as much as we could before the next spell of rain arrived.

As everyone’s probably away July‘s been pretty wet in the UK, so days out with Ruby or our special days out walking with Ruby have been tricky to fit in. However, we have made visits to Wentworth Castle, Temple Newsam and Nostell Priory.

This is our worst potato reveal ever. Normally Casablanca produce an excellent crop of potatoes and they’ve done this for a good number of years. After this year we may have to change for another first early variety next year.
