NT: Dunham Massey
Dunham Massey in Cheshire is set in a 300 acre deer park. It also has a formal garden and lake which is home to many water birds and a recently opened winter garden. The seven acre winter garden has been built on an area that was originally part of the deer park and came about as a direct response to public demand to be able to visit Dunham Massey in what used to be its closed season.
Roy Lancaster took a supportive role in the creation of the garden and local schoolchildren helped in the planting of over 200,000 bulbs.
When we visited in March 2010 the garden still had a new look to it and after a very poor winter and early spring things were maybe not as advanced as they could have been. Despite this we enjoyed our visit – there are plenty of areas to enjoy walks and the trees at this time of year with bare branches standing out against a clear blue sky looked wonderful.
