NT: Calke Abbey
Calke Abbey is in Ticknall, Derbyshire. Must admit when we went along for a visit we ended up at the exit rather than the entrance and the one way system that is in operation means that they are in totally different places. To avoid falling victim to the same problem don't head for Calke village! Calke Abbey is situated 10 miles south of Derby, on A514 at Ticknall between Swadlincote and Melbourne.
For the visiting gardener there are both flower and vegetable gardens. There is also an auricula theatre although when we visited the auriculas had been ousted by geraniums (pelagoniums). In Calke Park you can enjoy a walk through ancient woodland and pastureland. Two of the oak trees are reputed to be over 1,000 years old - just think they would date back to before William the Conqueror invaded Britain. Walks take you alongside large ponds and weirs. You can also watch the red and fallow deer browsing in a large enclosure.
