NT: Clumber Park

Owned by the National Trust, Clumber Park is situated near Worksop in Nottinghamshire. The walled kitchen garden covers four acres and is in the process of being restored, therefore much of the planting is fairly new. The garden is dominated by a 451 foot long glasshouse. Besides plants this houses a museum of gardening tools. Included within the walled garden are vegetable plots, herbaceous borders, an orchard containing around 58 varieties of apples and a herb border.

Fruit and vegetables grown on the vegetable plots supply the restaurant in the visitor's centre.

Other things to do whilst you are there:

  • The Walled Kitchen Garden is just part of the 3,800 acre Clumber Park estate. It was once the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle.
  • You can hire a bicycle to explore the 20 miles cycle route - one of which takes you around the lake or take a walk around the park. There is also a Victorian Pleasure Ground which was designed in the 18th century to provide secluded and beautiful walks for the owners  to enjoy.
  • Also on the estate is the Victorian Clumber chapel and a visitors centre.
  •  Also they allow you to take your dog on a lead in all garden areas which many NT properties do not which as far as I am concerned gives them a gold star! It doesn't appear to cause them any problem so not sure why others find it necessary to keep dog owners out unless they abandon their pet!
