Berry fruit on our plot

 

We grow a wide variety of berry fruit on our plot. The redcurrants were inherited so we have no idea of the variety,

 

The gooseberries were mainly grown from cutting provided by a plot neighbour so again those varieties are unknown. We did however plant a Pax and a Hinnonmaki Yellow.

 

We planted four blueberries which fruit over n expended period but the labels were lost and they we planted prior to s keeping accurate records.

 

Our five jostaberries all came from one plant. When the original bush was first planted it was rather leggy and so I cut it back. I decided to try using the prunings as cuttings which rooted very easily. Consequently not only have we have large plants now but we gave numerous plants away. The fruit is much loved by the wood pigeons who often break branches in their effort to reach the fruit, Fortunately the bushes are very resilient.

 

 

 The white currants are an unknown variety and don't produce much of a crop. The berries are small and not really usable.

 

The cranberries grow in tubs as when we tried to grow them in open ground they just sprawled around making an untidy, unweedable mess

 

We grow three varieties of blackcurrant;

Ebony

Ben Lomond

Ben Connan

 

We have several varieties of strawberries to provide an extended season. These varieties that we have change as we replace older plants with newer ones but Malwina as a particular favourite. It is the last to fruit and produces very delicious, large, dark red berries.

The alpine strawberries are grown from seed and  are restocked every couple of years, They continue to produce fruit until the first frosts.

 

In 2018 we planted a black raspberry.
