This diary is a summary of our garden activities. The links are to blog posts that often give more detail.

1 - 4 March

 

No gardening this week - mostly confined indoors due to snow and freezing conditions

Full time job keeping bird table topped up and bird bath thawed

Everything on hold - hope the flowers have survived under the snow

Started to thaw Sunday resulting in mist

Before and after the snow arrived

Good news - meteorological spring has arrived

Our of the freezer and into the fridge

Balmy weather in more ways than one

5 - 11 March

 

 

Snow returned but didn't stick around

Most of the flowers seem to have survived

Pollinated the apricot blossom

Seed potatoes moved back into the greenhouse and summerhouse

Broad beans sowed

Visited the plot

Tidied  some more beds including making a start on perennial bed

Pruned roses and sambucus niger on the plot

Picked some sprouts

Visited North Yorkshire Moors

We're glad the snow has gone

Overnight spring has arrived

Apricot flowers and unwanted visitor

More snow spring didn't last

Plenty of wet weather

12 - 18 March

No outdoor gardening again this week - we keep thinking that we have seen the last of the now and back it comes

Sowed leeks and lettuce

More apricot flower pollination but petals are now falling

Nectarine flower buds are showing pink petals - there are more than I thought

Peach buds swelling

The watercress was surviving bit for how much longer.

Some decent weather urgently required

Seed sowing - madness?

It keeps on raining

Enough is enough

I should have moved our potatoes

19 - 25 March

 

Snowed again

Planted Casablanca potatoes in bags in the greenhouse

Sowed sweet peas

Daphne flowering and first couple of flowers on the red camellia

Bought yellow clivia, birds nest fern, dahlia tubers, pot of parsely, mint and coriander

Recovered last year's dahlias from the garage

Managed three afternoons on the plot

Weeded and fertilised perennial bed.

Tidied fruit beds and started tidying beds for planting up

Picked sprouts

Nectarine flowers open so I started to pollinate

Native primroses starting to flower

Cut back autumn fruiting raspberries and mulched summer fruiting ones

Trimmed apples

Tulip leaves on the plot have been nipped by the cold

The beast is relenting

Done all we can

At last we get to work on the allotment

26 - 31 March

 

Continued pollinating peach and nectarine

Broad beans growing well

Tidied and prepared beds on the allotment

Planted out hardy annual plants

Planted shallot and onion sets

Harvested small cabbage and leeks

General tidy up in garden and garden greenhouse

Early brassica plants arrived and potted up.

Canna repotted

Ferns cut back

Most of roses pruned

Trimmed dead from hostas and trimmed faded heathers.

Trimmed pebble bed plants

Pieris is flowering

Frogs have arrived

Beds dug in the nick of time

Nectarine and peach

They'll arrive when they are good and ready
