Some digging pruning and hoeing

Friday afternoon was dull but reasonable mils for the beginning of February so we headed for the allotment to get a few winter jobs done.

I’ve been planning on getting our old strawberry bed dug over for a couple of years now. I managed to get half of the bed dug over in late autumn 2022. A dry summer put a hold on digging over the bed.

The bed is now dug over and I’m hoping that my little cultivator will be able to break the soil down enough to be able to plant a couple of rows of potatoes. The weigela and buddleia alongside this bed were given a hard prune.

All our buddleias were also cut back.

All the prunings were added to the heap from the elder and apple hedge that was cut back in January. The heap is now rather enormous.

I’m planning on a bonfire one afternoon over the next couple of weeks. The forecast is for some sunny bright days so hopefully no rain.

First experimental sowings of the season

I’m trying some early sowings of onions and shallots. They will be germinated inside our growlight. Hopefully, once they have germinated the weather will be okay for them to move into our cold greenhouse.

We did some work at home on the woodland border and medlar bed. The main task was to move a Cornus which was blocking our narrow pathway into the border.

The lawn border was given a bit of a tidy up.

It was now much easier to see our snowdrops.
