April 2024
Sowing, Planting & Preparation

01 - 07 April

06 April at the allotment

The ground is very wet but we managed to plant our overwintering sweet peas and our first bed of onions, shallots and garlic.

Sunday, 07 April 2024

We considered it would be too wet at the allotment so time was spent sowing tomatoes, chilli, leeks and some spring onions working in the greenhouse at home. The weekend has been very windy with gale force winds and rain but mild.

08 - 14 April

Wednesday 10th April 2024

I did some potting on in our home greenhouse. More rain in the afternoon prevented a visit to the allotment.

3 dahlia tubers that had survived winter left in the greenhouse covered with woodchip were moved into large 10″ pots.

We spent the afternoon at the plot. After 2 dry days, I decided to cut the grass paths. We concentrated on plots 28,29 and 30 hoping to cut the grass on plots 41 and 42 on Saturday afternoon. New wires were added to the new raspberry posts on plot 30. Two rows of Elfe potatoes were planted and nearly all the weed control fabric on this side of the plot was removed.

15 - 21 April

Monday, 15 April 2024

I decided to try germinating some seeds on damp kitchen towel.

Saturday, 20 April 2024

We had an afternoon sorting out some new environmesh, planting onions shallot and garlic as well as 2 long rows of potatoes.

Sunday, 21 April 2024

Another afternoon on the plot planting. I managed to get a couple of beds tilled as well.

Greenhouse sowings

Friday & Saturday 26 & 27 April 2024

The leeks sown earlier in pots have germinated poorly so we are trying the damp kitchen towel method hoping for improved germination. Last year our parsnips sown this way were very successful so we are repeating the method this year.
