Allotment on shortest day 21-December-2021

Shortest day

Tuesday was our shortest day of the year. To me it’s the first milestone of winter as from now on each day will be getting a little bit more daylight. However that change is very gradual for the next few weeks.

Harvested on 21 December 2021

Despite Tuesday being another cold and cloudy day we decided to pop down to the allotment to harvest what we could for Christmas dinner. We had no intention of staying any longer than we needed to. The Brussels sprouts plants were dug up and the whole plant including most of the roots placed in a bucket to take home. We’re hoping this will keep the sprouts as fresh as possible for Christmas Day.

Tuesday became the fifth day in a row without a hint of sunshine. We’ve had a couple of frosty nights this week but the cloudy, and sometimes misty, conditions have left everything extremely wet even though though there has been very little rain this week.

Temperatures & rainfall Record 15-21 December 2021

Whilst it’s nice to know that that the hours of daylight are increasing, I always think that the worst of the winter weather will be in January and February. I’m not sure if the weather models have decided whether we’ll get rain or snow over Christmas Day and Boxing Day. I’m guessing if the weather follows the usual late December pattern it will be rain.
