Models were correct – we got some snow

It’s turned out that the weather models were correct when they forecast around a week ago we might get some snow. We woke up on Saturday morning to a light covering of wet slushy snow.

The snow arrived thanks to storm Arwen. It brought a night of very stormy weather with high winds and rain.

Temperature & Rainfall Data 21-27 November 2021

Not only did it bring the rain and snow but it arrived courtesy of a cold northerly gale force wind. The temperature didn’t manage to get much above freezing all day on Saturday.

We don’t often get gale force northerly winds. Mostly our strongest winds blow in a westerly direction. The strongest gust of wind I’ve recorded occurred on 29 November 2015 with a speed of 43mph. In comparison storm Arwen managed only 26mph but I’m not complaining.

Needless to say with the atrocious weather we haven’t been to the allotment.

Oh? Snow? But this is only November! Is this the earliest you’ve ever had snow?

That’s a really good question, Jane. It’s certainly unusual for us to get snow in November but not only that it has snowed on 2 consecutive days. I’ve still got to look through some photos to find any snow in November as my weather station doesn’t tell me when it snowed. Obviously snowed doesn’t get recorded as rainfall until it thaws so Sunday’s snow gets recorded as 1.4mm of rainfall on Monday. However, one thing I can say is that it is not all that unusual for us to get a cold snap at the end of November. The topic of my next blog post I think.
