Just missed a white Christmas

I don’t really have much to say this week. Christmas and the New Year are now behind us and winter has moved in with a vengeance. It has been cold, very cold.

We haven’t ventured to the allotment. Fortunately, we didn’t need any vegetables.

We wrapped up warmly and had our usual walk at Nostell. People are still on holiday so it was, once again, very busy. No doubt next week things will have calmed down.

Most of the lake was frozen over, but there were a few patches of open water where the waterbirds could swim.

As usual, we took some food for the birds. The ducks didn’t waste any time and gathered around Martyn as he scattered the food. We didn’t see any of the swans but then one juvenile spotted us. With all the food used up, it was too late which annoyed the swan and we had to make a hasty retreat.

The pair of Canada geese swimming at the far end of the lake also missed out.

The winter lakes are now filling. No doubt these will be topped up as the snow from the weekend’s snow melts.

The fungi were surviving despite the freezing temperature.

The snow that was forecast arrived later than expected at around midnight on Saturday night. When we awoke on Sunday morning the world was white.

As I write this, late afternoon on Sunday, it is raining so maybe it will wash the snow away.

Ruby had a busy week but not all of it in a good way. She was due to be clipped on Saturday so after a walk on Friday it was time for a wash ready for when the groomer arrived on Saturday morning. It was bad timing as Ruby lost her fluffy coat just as the wintry weather arrived.

Lastly, some of last week’s meals.

Some of our leeks, potatoes and parsnip were used in a chicken and leek pot pie

More parsnips and onion were used in a turkey and parsnip curry.

Parsnip was used yet again, along with squash, onion and garlic in a casssoulet.

That’s all for this week so as always keep safe, keep well and keep warm.

It’s snowy and icy here, with more snow predicted. I am already ready for spring!

It’s definitely turned cold. The snow is still hanging around here, though it’s rather crunchy now as it’s iced over. I was expecting the snow to be washed away as quickly as it arrived but the rain which was forecast never materialised. It’s due to warm up again next week, I’m sure Ruby will be pleased, as will Archie, we always keep his coat short these days. Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy new year.
