Are we late – still nothing planted? – plums, greengages and jostaberries are on flower
We are still preparing beds for planting at the allotment. We’ve had some lovely warm days but some cold nights so nothing has been moved into the allotment. We are planning on planting our early potatoes at the weekend. The plums and greengages along with our jostaberries are beginning to flower. The problem with early flowering fruit is that a frost will destroy all the fruit. Hopefully, that’s not going to happen. Our over wintering garlic and onions are looking good at the moment.

An exploratory first visit to Hardwick Hall – How did we get on?
We were looking for somewhere different to visit and decided to try Hardwick Hall. Ruby always enjoys somewhere different to sniff. It was a great place to visit. It was another National Trust property where dogs are allowed to go most places including the garden. The garden looks interesting and will certainly be worth a return visit to see how it progresses. Part of the garden looks like a different sort of kitchen garden with planting done in an unusual fashion. The estate is large so there was a nice long walk for Ruby once we had finished our visit to the garden.

A gardening comparison – Our plot v Walled garden at Clumber Park
We visited the walled kitchen garden at Clumber Park to see if we could copy any of their ideas for our plot. It was also a good time to compare planting progress at this early time in the season.

A walk & game with Ruby, paw washing and an allotment update
A cold and cloudy week so no planting at the allotment. Too early to start planting potatoes. Of course, we still need to take Ruby out for some walks and fit in a few games where possible. At the weekend, we did some more tidying up at the allotment. We now have a very large pile of tree prunings that need to be burnt.

A productive weekend at the allotment – potatoes set to chit and more…
We made the most of a sunny and mild weekend at the plot. I think it’s too early to begin planting, but we got plenty of tidying up done and some ground prepared ready to begin planting towards the end of the month.

Some old-fashioned gardening – digging – parsnips and leeks cleared
We visited the plot to get some tidying up done before the main gardening season begins. All our remaining parsnips and leeks were cleared. These will be cleaned, chopped and frozen. Sue started work sorting out the perennial bed.
