Cold for planting – so did some work on the perennial bed
Sunday afternoon was cold with the temperature hovering around the 7°C mark. We decided this was too cold for planting potatoes and decided to do some more tidying up on our perennial bed. The 2 black elders were cut back as left to their own devices they would take over the bed and also cast too much shade on other parts of the plot. The roses were pruned and some weeding was done. The irises have been left until another day to be sorted out.

The first planting of the season at the allotment
Due to the weather, we haven’t visited the plot for a couple of weeks. We took the opportunity of a break in the weather to do a little bit of planting. Some leftover onion sets left in pots to overwinter in the greenhouse were used to fill in gaps at the allotment due to losses through winter. The rest of the afternoon was spent doing some tidying up although we did do a little bit of harvesting before we left for home.
Sue wrote a blog post on our visit too which you can find here

At least the wren thinks it’s spring
We haven’t been to the allotment much this month due to the poor weather although we’ve been getting out to take Ruby for her walks. We’ve spent more time looking out of the window which is why we saw this wren building a nest in the garden. Sue has also written a blog post about the wren building it’s nest which you can find here:

Ruby’s shower day before being clipped
Ruby generally gets clipped every 6 to 8 weeks. Before being clipped Ruby has a shower which she certainly doesn’t enjoy. However, she’s definitely getting more tolerant of them now. We can almost guarantee that once we’ve finished drying her she will go downstairs and have what we call a “cracker dog “ which I think is more commonly referred to as a zoomy.

Canada geese at Nostell Priory
The aim was to capture some video of the Tufted ducks at Nostell this week when we fed the ducks around the lake. I was surprised to see two Canada geese swimming into the shot. We also took some video of Ruby playing chase ball as we walked through the top meadow.
