Disastrous early potato harvest plus cut flowers, courgettes and mini cauliflowers

I decided to dig up a few more early potatoes. At the moment, we are heading towards one of the smallest potato crops I can remember. This is all down to the lack of rain. We also picked some very small cauliflowers, some courgettes and Sue picked some sweet peas and dahlias.

Covered for almost 12 months – Can I prepare this bed for peas?

This bed has been covered with weed control fabric since late July last year. I need somewhere to plant some pea plants and this bed seems to be my best option. However, the dry weather might make it difficult. All I can do is remove the weed control fabric and see the condition of the ground underneath and try to cultivate the ground.

Early July wildlife and Ruby pronks in the long grass

Some bits of video from our recent visits. We spotted the little egret at Clumber Park. The flock of greylag geese at Clumber Park. The swans and cygnets were spotted on our walk at Nostell Priory. Ruby was also filmed at Nostell Priory looking for her ball in the long grass in the meadow. 00:00 little egret at Clumber Park 00:37 greylag geese at Clumber Park 00:52 swans and Cygnets at Nostell Priory 01:50 Ruby pronking in the meadow at Nostell Priory

A parched Thorpe Perrow Arboretum

For a change, we had a ride up into North Yorkshire to visit Thorpe Perrow Arboretum. Just like us, the arboretum has obviously been suffering from a lack of rainfall. Some of the staff were going round the arboretum with water bowsers, trying to keep newly planted trees alive. The stream adjacent to the cafe had dried up completely.

Our peas get planted at last, some get pea sticks and some protection from wood pigeons

A busy afternoon at the plot planting out peas. Ideally, they should have been planted out a week ago but I delayed planting due to hot weather and lack of rain. Some peas also received pea sticks for support, while others received an environmesh cover to protect them from wood pigeons. If all our plums ripen, we will have a good harvest this year. The weight of plums on one branch was too heavy and the branch broke. I’m hoping that the fruit will still ripen.

The two W’s watering & weeding

Just a quick video. We spent most of the afternoon watering and weeding the plot. Filling a can of water takes a long time, so watering is a very slow process. We took a break from watering to do some weeding. I was watering our Cobra climbing beans when I noticed there were some beans ready for picking. These were added to the other bits and pieces we had harvested during the afternoon.
