July 2022 Video Diary

A mischievous Ruby at Nostell Priory
We like to give Ruby a run in the dog friendly field at Nostell when we visit. This week was no exception. Ruby managed to split a tennis ball and didn’t want to let it go.

Charlotte potato reveal plus Pongo beans Liberty beans and calabrese Monclano
I decided to lift a few roots of Charlotte potatoes to see how they’d coped with the dry conditions. We also harvested some Pongo beans and Liberty beans.
The seeds had been very kindly given to us by Bill & Val’s Allotment’s https://www.youtube.com/c/BillValsAll…
As you can see from the end of the video we did have quite a decent harvest.

Planting out some manky brassica plants in the rain
These brassica plants really needed planting out a few weeks ago. However, with our very dry ground we held back hoping for some rain that never came. Then came the very short lived heatwave so as soon as that was over we decided to plant them out even though the ground was very dry.

Casablanca potato reveal – our third recycling crate
After digging three roots of Casablanca potatoes at the allotment I decided to check out another of our recycling crates of potatoes. It’s always more fun with Ruby involved.

Casablanca potato reveal and harvesting jostaberries and courgettes
Our potatoes are really suffering in the dry weather. Rather than looking their lush best in mid July the haulms are already brown a sure indication that the potatoes won’t do any more growing. I decided to lift a root of our early Casablanca potatoes to see if the potatoes were any good. We also managed to harvest our first courgettes of the year along with more jostaberries.

Cygnets enjoy a gorgeous sunny day – Nostell Priory
Filmed on our visit to Nostell Priory on 08 July 2020.
Just a very short video of the cygnets at Nostell Priory making the most of the fine weather and learning their preening techniques.

We need rain for the allotment not a heatwave
We seem to have been watering the allotment for virtually the whole growing season. We haven’t had a decent wet day for several months now and it’s beginning to take a toll on the allotment.

Our first small harvest of Kent Blue peas
We were kindly given these seeds by Bill and Val. Bill and Val do regular updates from their allotment and always have some helpful advice. Their videos are always worth a watch.
You can find their channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/BillValsAll…
Kent Blue peas are a heritage variety of mange tout peas. They have struggled a bit due to some very dry conditions but they’ve managed to produce enough pods for us to get a small helping of peas. We will have to leave enough pods on the plants to produce seeds for next year.

Classic swan and cygnet video
This video was filmed on June 30th but not edited and uploaded until July.
We were lucky on our last visit to Nostell Priory to see the swans with their cygnets. They were close enough to me banking to get some reasonable shots.

Picking jostaberries and raspberries
We have protected two of our four jostaberry bushes with netting this year. Last year they were left uncovered and the wood pigeons and blackbirds cleared the lot. We didn’t pick a single berry. The raspberries are left uncovered and we normally get plenty of fruit even though we have to share it with the blackbirds.
