2024-01-27-Free bean poles, well almost. Coppicing hazelnut
Saturday afternoon saw us make our first visit to the plot to actually get some jobs done rather than just harvesting a few vegetables. It was also our first visit since storm Jocelyn so we had a quick look around to see if we had any damage.
Fortunately, we were damage free although once again our plot neighbour’s greenhouse had rolled onto our plot so the first job was to return it to the adjacent allotment. It was time to cut back our hazel tree which we coppice every few years for bean poles and pea sticks. It’s a job that needs doing before any birds decide to use the tree for nesting. The plan was that whilst I cut back the hazel Sue would cut back the buddleia bushes.
Everything was cut back and the hazel poles stacked ready for use through summer and the buddleia prunings were added to our pile of rubbish to be burnt as soon as we get a few dry days.
Sue also managed to find a few Brussels sprouts to pick before we left for home.

Huge parsnips dug up – our best ever crop?
We headed out to the allotment to see if we had any damage from the storms before Christmas. We also needed to see if we could find a few fresh vegetables. The wind had blown the covers from the brassicas and removed some weed control fabric but there was no damage to our shed or greenhouse. We decided to dig up some parsnips and leeks. The parsnips were chitted on damp paper and we thought that some had grown long roots before we planted them. Would they have formed multi forked roots?

Ruby’s muddy New Year’s Day walk
We decided on a New Year’s Day walk in the park with Ruby. We’ve had lots of rain during the last couple of weeks of December. At this time of year, the ground takes a long time to dry out. The paths and the path edges were very muddy but that didn’t bother Ruby until she got back home and needed her legs and feet washing.
