Late winter colours at National Trust’s Dunham Massey
We paid a visit to Dunham Massey’s winter garden. We probably missed the best of the snowdrops. Nevertheless, there was plenty to see in the garden.

Have our dahlias survived winter?
I decided to take a look in the greenhouse to see if our dahlias had survived through winter. They have been left in there since they were lifted last autumn and only covered with a couple of layers of fleece.

Compost heap repairs required plus a little bit of harvesting and buddleia pruning
The weather up to date in February hasn’t been conducive to allotment visits. However, Saturday was a nice February day so we headed off for a proper allotment visit. The first job I wanted to do was repair our compost heap damaged in the winter gales. Sue was planning to trim back the lavender bed and prune the buddleia bushes. The plan was to harvest a few parsnips and leeks as well.

It’s getting dangerous feeding the birds
The weather over the past few weeks has been grim. Dull, grey, damp and drizzly every day. However, we still need to get out and take Ruby for walks. It’s getting dangerous feeding the swans and ducks at Nostell Priory. The adult swans are fine as are the couple of Canada geese and variety of ducks that all arrive once they see you with food. The two cygnets that remain are a different matter. They just head straight for you to snatch any food from you. All we can do is make a hasty retreat when they arrive.

We’ve bought our potatoes for this year but how are last year’s keeping
We bought our seed potatoes from our local garden centre. We will be trying a few new varieties to us this coming season. I’m hoping that we do as well as last year. We are still eating last year’s potatoes which have been stored in the garage over winter.
