Free raspberry canes and more large parsnips
I spent the afternoon emptying one of our compost bins and Sue tidied up some of our raspberry canes. We decided to lift a few more parsnips. Once again we had some large parsnips although a few were stumpy rather than long rooted. The parsnips are now beginning to grow and will need to be used quickly.

Another very wet walk at Nostell Priory
After morning rain we took Ruby for a walk at Nostell Priory. It was difficult to find a reasonable dry route around the estate. The ducks were making good use of the extra lakes that had formed due to all the rainfall.

Potatoes move from garage to greenhouse until planting time
When I bought our seed potatoes at the beginning of January I put them in the garage with our stored eating potatoes safe from any frost. I checked them the other day and noticed that they were beginning to sprout. This is probably due to a rather mild February. Anyway, they are now set out in seed trays to chit. I’ve covered them with several layers of fleece as I’m sure we’ll have some frosts before they’re planted but hopefully not very severe.

More compost excavations and jostaberries pruned
It’s still very wet on the allotment so much so that it’s squelchy underfoot. However, we had to get on with some jobs and I continued emptying the compost bins. The jostaberries were also given a prune. Two bushes were cut back very hard and probably wont produce any fruit this year. Two bushes were lightly pruned and they will hopefully produce some fruit this year.

Good stuff in the compost heap
The winter has taken its toll on my compost bins so I decided to empty any decent compost that is in them and reset all the compost panels. It will take me a few days to do this but I’m hoping to get it done before the main growing season begins in late March. The first barrowfuls of compost have gone on what will be this year’s potato beds.

It’s all about the water this week.
It never seems to dry up at the moment. We don’t necessarily get lots of rain but enough to keep everywhere wet. We’re constantly looking for the driest paths when out walking Ruby. This week Ruby was clipped and showered neither of which she’s very appreciative of. She did have a trip to the garden centre where she got to smell a few doggie treats followed by a walk around a very wet Temple Newsam.

Snow’s gone for Ruby’s walk
All the snow that fell on Thursday disappeared overnight. We had heavy rain through the night as well. This all meant that there was plenty of water flowing in the beck on Ruby’s walk in the park on Friday morning.

Snowing at lunchtime
Not a good gardening day. Snow is supposed to turn to rain later this afternoon.

Storing potatoes over winter. How have they done? Plus beetroot & carrots
Have you ever wondered exactly what happens to all those potatoes and carrots that we harvest from the allotment in autumn time? The potatoes go into strong paper sacks and are stored in the garage. We’ve done this for a long time now and the potatoes remain in good condition through winter and into spring. By March they are usually beginning to sprout new shoots and begin to turn soft and are of no use for eating.
We’ve tried different methods of keeping carrots through the winter. We’ve left them in the ground, covered with straw to protect them from frost but this way proved to be very hit and miss depending on the weather. A wet winter would see them rot in the ground. A more successful method was to store them in used compost in large tubs kept in the greenhouse over winter. However, last autumn when the carrots were dug up I didn’t have any tubs or used compost available and decided to try storing them in paper sacks and old compost bags.
Some beetroots were also stored in paper sacks.
You can decide from the video whether it’s been a success or not.

Searching for spring at Nostell Priory
We were looking out for the first signs of spring on Ruby’s walk at Nostell Priory this week. There were a few clumps of snowdrops out and we managed to find a few daffodils that were almost coming into flower. We thought that there were signs of bluebells coming through the leaf litter as well. In the main garden, there were lots of snowdrops in flower but Ruby isn’t allowed into the main garden.
