Potato harvest almost completed time to check on the autumn & winter vegetables
I’ve only a few potato stragglers to lift now so I thought I needed to check our autumn and winter crops were okay. It’s only a couple of weeks since I picked all the caterpillars off our brassica plants so I thought they needed another inspection.

Digging the last maincrop potatoes, lifting our onions and a carrot reveal
While the weather remained dry I thought it would be a good idea to finish lifting our potatoes. So far all our potatoes have been blemish free with no slugs damage at all. Sue thought it would be a good idea to lift some onions too rather than waiting for some rain and then trying to dry them out. We decided to try lifting some carrots and see how they had been affected by the lack of rain.

Greenhouse tomatoes – our first ripe Buffalosun
I look at how our tomatoes are doing in the plot greenhouse. All the plants have plenty of tomatoes on it is just a question of how long they take to go red. Some tomatoes have developed some blossom end rot but I think that’s down to how they’ve been watered. The plot greenhouse doesn’t get watered that regularly. However, most of our tomatoes are doing really well.

Strawberry bed first aid
This is our new strawberry bed which we started planting up last year. The last couple of times we’ve planted up new strawberry beds we’ve used weed control fabric and planted the strawberries through that. However, after a few years, our soil becomes very hard and it’s difficult to cultivate once the strawberries need replacing. This time we planted without using weed control fabric . It does mean we need to keep the soil cultivated. So far the strawberry bed has been quite successful with a decent crop this year. Hopefully, the newly planted strawberries will produce next year.

Garden and greenhouse tour early August 2022
A look around our garden and greenhouse at the beginning of August 2022. Much of the garden is suffering from the dry weather. However, our tubs have survived as they have been watered throughout summer. The greenhouse is now rather overgrown with tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

Brassica devastation by small white butterflies
These brassica plants had suffered from delayed planting out due to the dry weather. Now they’ve been attacked by caterpillars. The offending caterpillars have been removed and I’m hoping that the plants will recover. I’ll have to make sure that they are kept well watered.

Heidi Red potato reveal, German specialty with red skin & flesh plus Alouette & Osprey reveal
Heidi Red and Alouette were our trial potatoes for this year. At planting time the tubers weren’t anything special and with the dry weather we weren’t expecting much of a crop.
