Lazy start to the new gardening year

The weather at the start of the new year had been on the miserable side. Rather than any nice, cold, crisp, sunny days, all we get is showers or longer spells of rain as one rain band after another comes in from the Atlantic Ocean. The upside is that the weather is on the mild side so at least the central heating costs are less than in that spell of cold weather in December.

We’ve still to visit the allotment this year. It’s all too easy to put off visiting with the dull conditions. We do need to make a trip to see if we can find some fresh vegetables to harvest.

The only gardening job we have managed to complete this year is getting our seed order for the coming growing season submitted to Kings Seeds. We’ve added a few new varieties for this year. These include tomato Fandango, which is claimed to have some blight resistance and we are trying a shallot from seed this year called Zebrune following on from a reasonably successful trial with red onions from seed last year.

Although we haven’t been to the allotment we have managed to get out for a few walks with Ruby. Ruby doesn’t mind the wet conditions or the mud under foot or paws as the case may be and finishes up with very muddy feet after a walk around Nostell Priory.

Ruby’s not all that keen on the washing feet routine that’s needed when we get back home.
