It almost goes without saying that if it rains a lot then we are told it’s the worst it has ever been. It seemed a very wet start to the year so I thought I’d look back at previous years and see if we’ve had wetter starts. It would be interesting to see how we dealt with wetter years than this one if indeed we’ve had a wetter start.
I was rather surprised that this year fell into sixth place since 2010 when I began keeping records. As 2018 was in first place I looked back at some of the YouTube video and blog posts from that year.
It turns out that April 2018 wasn’t only wet but cold as well. Our first early potatoes didn’t get planted until the 20th of the month so we are well in front of that this year.

However, I should mention that by June we had drought conditions and required rain. We were busy watering the allotment. The video below is titled “Digging in the Drought” and it was filmed in June 2018
We are of course only halfway through the month so it is not a final comparison with 2018. I’m guessing that just like in 2018 anything is possible as far as our weather goes.
At least we managed to get some work done at home and the allotment over the weekend. Some beds were dry enough to be dug over and now we have some beds ready for planting more potatoes, onions, shallots, broad beans and brassica plants. A video of our work at home and the allotment is included below.
