Steam trains always create a touch of nostalgia to those of us who were about before
their demise as a common means of travel. However, they still hold a fascination
for those who don’t remember such a time and even to very young children they still
are the image they conjure up when thinking of trains maybe something to do with
stories such as Thomas the Tank Engine.
The photos on the right and eight below were all taken at the North Yorkshire Moors
Railway Autumn Steam Gala in September 2012.
The first five photos were taken at Goathland Station which has featured as Aidensfield
station in the TV series Heartbeat and as Hogsmeade station in a Harry Potter film.
Railway enthusuasts - if you hover over the following photos there are details of
the engines
Most of the North Yorkshire railway operates on a single track and so trains wait
in stations to cross over. As a safety precaution a train can only proceed along
a section of track if they carry a token in the form of a metal ring. The photo above
right shows the swap over of tokens the signalman receives the token from the train
which belongs to the section of track completed and hands over the token for the
next leg of the journey. The train waiting in the station cannot proceed until they
have possession of the token being handed over to the signalman.
Sometimes two small engines are used to pull a train as in the photo above left -
neither engine has sufficient power to pull the train through the hilly terrain of
the North Yorkshire Moors alone.
The four photos above were taken at Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors - one
has had an artistic effect applied - and the three photos below were taken at Blaenau
Ffestiniog station in Wales. I’ve added a black and white effect to some to enhance
the nostalgic look!
