Who can resist such cute little creatures who seem to be on permanent red alert.
Meerkats belong to the mongoose family and are in no way related to cats as the name
suggests.
Meerkats are native to parts of Africa mainly in desert areas.
A group of meerkats is called a mob, clan or gang which makes them sound to be very
aggressive creatures. They are social creatures and take turns at sentry duty whilst
the rest of the group forage for food. The sentry pose is one we associate most with
meerkats. If danger is spotted the sentry will alert the rest of the group by barking
or whistling. At this danger signal the whole group will quickly disappear down
burrows which form large underground networks.
Their diet is mainly insect based but they will eat a wide range of plants and small
creatures. They are immune to scorpion venom and therefore can include scorpions
in their dinner menu.
