Carrot flies can damage the carrots. Their maggots tunnel in the root. To help  prevent this the plants can be covered by a fine mesh to protect them.

If carrot plant leaves are reddish it is a sign of carrot fly damage. As the damage becomes worse the leaves will turn yellow.
