Once the danger of frost has passed, young runner bean plants grown in pots are then planted in the ground. Before planting outside the plants should be placed in a cold frame to ‘harden them off’. This means getting them used to the cooler temperatures outside.
Runner beans are climbing plants and need to be given support.
Many people build structures using bamboo canes.
Here two beans are planted alongside each of the canes. If one plant dies or is eaten then, hopefully, there will still be one plant left to grow on.
