The garden pea plant is a climbing plant. It has tendrils so that it can grab any support to help it to climb.
The tendrils are special, very thin, leaves. The ends develop into hooks which reach out until they touch a suitable support. They then wrap tightly around the support.
If you gently stroke a tendril it will begin to curl as it ‘thinks’ that it has touched something that may support it.
