Shallots are grown from bulbs. They can also be grown from seed. The bulbs are bigger than onion sets. Each set is a fully mature shallot. Each one will divide into a cluster of full sized bulbs. The bulbs are spaced about 15 centimetres apart and are pushed into the soil so that just their ‘noses’ are showing.

As for onions, birds can make life difficult by pulling the bulbs out of the ground.
