Onions can be grown from seed but are more easily grown from small bulbs – called sets. A set is an immature bulb and each set will grow to become a full size onion. The bulbs are pushed into the soil about 10 centimetres apart. Birds just love to pull them back out. There are two types of onions – one type is planted in spring and the other type is planted in autumn. The autumn onions are ready to eat earlier than those planted in spring. Onion sets can also be started into growth in pots.
