The Green Lane allotment site

The Green Lane Allotment site is situated in the Wakefield district. Wakefield is in West Yorkshire, England. There are approximately 60 plots, some tenants having multiple plots.

The photo below is an aerial shot taken from Google Maps. It was probably taken about three or four years ago during late summer. At this time many of the plots were derelict but a few of us gardened our plots surrounded by a sea of docks, thistles, bramble etc. One advantage of this was that the site was teeming with wildlife, flowers, birds and small animals. Now all of the plots are taken and much of the overgrowth has been cleared. Some of us still try to garden with wildlife in mind and provide habitats on our plots for a variety of wildlife.

Why are allotments important?

The site is fortunately positioned in a quiet location away from main roads and surrounded by a diverse range of habitats. To the west of the photo is a housing development, to the north are playing fields, to the south is more housing, fairly quiet a railway line with an overgrown embankment and to the east is a small industrial development, fields and large ponds.

The later images below were taken when all of the plots were being gardened at this point. You can see that things certainly have progressed!

The southern boundary is edged by a wall and the ubiquitous leylandii which grew to mammoth proportions but was since the photo was taken cut back. It is well populated by birds. The photograph below was taken looking from the opposite side of the site - from here you can see how much shade was cast by neighbouring conifer hedging - it was even worse in the middle of winter. Since cutting back the situation has improved a little.

The images above were taken from Microsoft Live Search Maps -click here to visit their site.

If you click on the images above you will be taken to the Flickr site - click on the all sizes link at the top of the photo and you will be able to access a large version of the photograph.

At the time the photograph was taken along the western boundary was a dilapidated wooden fence and along the northern and eastern boundaries are mature hawthorn and a broken down fence. We desperately needed a new fence but were told that council funding would not permit this so in order to make our site more secure we had  to acquire funds to pay for a new fence ourselves.
