I wrote a blog post about it <a href=\"https:\/\/glallotments.blogspot.com\/search?q=quince\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<br>Twelve years on and our little quince tree now looks like this.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221009_162653.jpg?resize=1000%2C640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"640\"><\/p>\n<p>This year it has provided us with a bumper harvest. Last week, we decided to pick as many fruits as we could as we didn&#8217;t want to leave fruit to rot on the tree. We knew that the tree was loaded with fruit but what we didn&#8217;t expect was the fill our barrow and several buckets with fruit. This was on top of the several buckets that we had already picked.<\/p>\n<p>We made a video of how we make a quince compote <a href=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/october-2022-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9734\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9734\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/DSC00714.jpg?resize=1000%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">24 October &#8211; Quince, cauliflower, leeks and courgettes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This year we have harvested 87 kg (192lb) of quince. We&#8217;ve managed to give some away but I get blank looks when I ask people if they like quinces.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/IMG_E5798-scaled.jpg?resize=1200%2C675&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"><\/p>\n<p>As well as harvesting quince, last week we harvested some cauliflowers, some courgettes, cabbage and our first leeks of the season. I would have expected the courgettes to be over and cleared away by now.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9807\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221030_140154-2.jpg?resize=1000%2C707&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"707\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">30 October &#8211; Leeks, cauliflowers and a courgette<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the cauliflowers was a bonus as it was a second flower from a plant that a cauliflower had already been harvested from.&nbsp;<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221030_140210-2.jpg?resize=1000%2C531&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"531\" style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"><\/p>\n<p>Most mornings, last week, were dull and wet but the rain cleared up during most afternoons and we were even treated to some sunshine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/DSC00720.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"><\/p>\n<p>As well as doing some harvesting we also managed to tidy a couple of long beds. The one on the right has been dug over. Even after all the rain the ground was surprisingly diggable. The bed on the left has just had the weeds cleared and is waiting to be dug.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/DSC00719.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"><\/p>\n<p>I weeded the end of the bed containing the leeks. This patch had hosted onions that were harvested some time ago. The area had been taken over by self sown cerinthe. I left a few plants at the end of the bed where they won&#8217;t be in the way when we are planting next year. We had a large clump of self sown cerinthe last year which provided the bees with an early supply of nectar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/DSC00708.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"><\/p>\n<p>The toadstools dotted in the grass are a sign that our drought is over.<\/p>\n<p>The allotment has been relegated on our list of priorities with the top spot being to make sure that Ruby doesn&#8217;t miss out on her exercise. The rain and the fact that now the clocks have been put back, we have fewer hours of daylight mean that we have to fit walks in when we can.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221027_134014-2.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"><\/p>\n<p>At Nostell,&nbsp;<span style=\"font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;\">now that most of the brood have left the lake,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;\">&nbsp;the parent swans are now enjoying a bit of rest and relaxation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/VideoCapture_20221029-134228.jpg?resize=1000%2C617&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"617\"><\/p>\n<p>Just one young swan remains but it is no longer hanging about with mum and dad.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221027_134405-2.jpg?resize=1000%2C641&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"641\"><\/p>\n<p>Ruby sits very patiently whilst we are taking photographs and keeps interested by keeping a close eye on everything that is going on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/YTREE2.jpg?resize=1000%2C296&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"296\"><\/p>\n<p>The autumn colours are increasing in beauty and the ground is carpeted by fallen leaves. Ruby has perfected the art of photo bombing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/TREES.jpg?resize=1000%2C578&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"578\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gate.jpg?resize=1000%2C579&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"579\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221027_141619-2.jpg?resize=1000%2C563&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\"><\/p>\n<p>Some of last week&#8217;s meals that used our vegetables were firstly a <a href=\"https:\/\/britishturkey.org.uk\/recipes\/british-turkey-cottage-pie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turkey cottage pie<\/a> which used some of our carrots, onions, leeks, potatoes, fresh thyme and some of our frozen peas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sheperd.jpg?resize=1000%2C346&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"346\"><\/p>\n<p>Some of our potatoes and garlic were used in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcrf-uk.org\/recipes\/chickpea-quinoa-and-turmeric-curry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chickpea and quinoa dish.<\/a> It didn&#8217;t look anything like the picture with the recipe. It may not be as photogenic but tasted good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2022\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221024_182538.jpg?resize=1000%2C844&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"844\"><\/p>\n<p>Martyn made a pizza topped with some of our tomatoes, onions and frozen peppers. The pizza was unexpectedly spicy as I&nbsp; accidentally got some frozen red chilli from the freezer instead of some red pepper.
