Last week we only had a very brief visit to the allotment. We took some material for the compost heap and would have stayed longer but it started to rain so we headed home.<\/p>

We have made good progress preparing the plot for its winter rest so there is no urgency and we can take a bit of a break when the weather is miserable.<\/p>

We are noticing more fungi on our walks. I have no idea of the varieties or whether they are poisonous or not, so Ruby is kept well away.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We had a usual walk at Nostell and an afternoon at Clumber Park, so there were plenty of opportunities to capture autumnal shots.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

My iPhone is fine for taking landscape photos, but as the following images show, I really needed my zoom lens to capture decent images of birds on the lakes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

At Nostell, we only managed a very blurry image of a group of wigeon as they were quite a distance away.<\/p>

\"\"<\/p>

All the cygnets still remain on the lake at Nostell.<\/p>

At Clumber Park, there were the usual large numbers of swans, some accompanied by cygnets. There were also the usual mallards, coots, and geese.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00a0As we walked around the lake, we came across lots of egrets dotted amongst the trees. Only one was near enough to photograph. It had yellow feet and so was a little egret. We can only assume the ones on the far side of the lake were also little egrets rather than the larger species.<\/p>

A pair of great crested grebes was cutting through the water in the centre of the lake. Here, the challenge wasn’t just the distance away but also the speed at which they were moving.\u00a0 Added to this, they kept disappearing from view behind the trees bordering the lake or by diving below the surface of the water to reemerge some distance away.<\/p>

Three cormorants were perched on a dead tree in the centre of a smaller lake. Again, they were some distance away and this time were also silhouetted against the sky.<\/p>

Maybe next time I will have to take my digital camera, but it is just so heavy to carry around all afternoon. I guess that when I do, the birds won’t put in an appearance.<\/p>

One meal that used some of our potatoes, onion, carrots and frozen green beans was this turkey dish<\/a>. The recipe calls for a grated potato topping but the last time I made this I thought sliced potatoes would be better.<\/p>
