Both of us grew up in mining villages, so places like Walton have a special interest for us.<\/p><p>It&#8217;s fascinating to walk through what is now a peaceful nature park and imagine the busy coal-mining landscape that once stood here.<\/p><p>We explore the lakes, woodland and footpaths, discover the remains of the Barnsley Canal, and take a look at some of the history of Walton Colliery. At its peak, the colliery employed more than 1,500 people and produced thousands of tons of coal every day.<\/p><p>Today, nature has reclaimed much of the former industrial site, creating a lovely place for a walk and plenty of opportunities to see wildlife.
