A Saturday afternoon at the allotment – a bumper crop of carrots and quinces.<\/h3>

Follow us on a Saturday afternoon on the plot. We lifted one of our beds of carrots. The varieties were Sweet Candle and Flakkee. After testing out our quinces last week I filled a couple of buckets without making much of an impression on the tree. We also managed a few other tidying up jobs<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Romance carrot reveal and have we messed up sweetcorn mini pop?<\/h3>

We’ve had some cold nights over the last week or so and we decided it was time to harvest our winter squashes. I dug up our first batch of Romance carrots for storing over winter. We’re not at all sure about our mini sweetcorn and will need to do some checking up online. We also harvested tomatoes, beetroot and picked a few quinces to see if the were ready.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A visit to Calke Abbey – Derbyshire – Ruby gets a passport – major problems on the motorway<\/h3>

We took Ruby on her first visit to Calke Abbey. We had last visited a good few years ago. The house is undergoing some external renovation and is surrounded by scaffolding. The property is looked after by the National Trust. They have a paw print rating for their properties depending on how dog friendly they are. Luckily Calke Abbey is 3 paws allowing Ruby access to nearly all the estate. Our walk took us along the boundary of the deer park and we were fortunate enough to catch sight of some deer. The return journey home was affected by a closure on the M1 due to an accident. The journey should have taken around one and a half hours but took some forty five minutes longer than expected due to the closure.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Planting winter onions and garlic<\/h3>

Last week we prepared a bed for planting our winter onions and garlic and this week we got around to planting the onion sets and garlic cloves. Our ground is still very dry and the ground was watered before and after planting. The ground was also given a good amount of fertiliser.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ruby\u2019s wag is back – Walk and a couple of games of chase at Temple Newsam<\/h3>

We visited Temple Newsam where we think Ruby sprained her tail last week. After been restricted on walking and playing Ruby was raring to go by the time we parked up the car.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Getting ready to plant winter onions and garlic<\/h3>

It’s that time of year when we need to prepare some ground for planting our winter onions and garlic. However, this year finding some ground that can be dug well enough for planting has been difficult. Normally I’d use a bed that has been cleared of potatoes but this year the ground was so dry when the potatoes were lifted that the ground isn’t suitable for planting. We decided to clear away some spent peas and see if our little tiller would be able to cultivate the ground and give us somewhere to plant our winter onions and garlic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Ruby loses her wag – visits to the vets<\/h3>

Ruby has done too much tail wagging and as a result has sprained her tail. She couldn’t lift her tail or sit down so we decided a trip to the vets was needed. Her problem was diagnosed as swimmers tail or broken wag. She was given an anti inflammatory injection at the vets and some tablets to take the following day. We were told to keep Ruby calm, keep her walks short and no ball games. However, the tablets made her sick so it resulted in a return trip to the vets and her medication was changed to pain killers only. The following day Ruby brought up some pink coloured bile which concerned us and after a telephone call to the vets Ruby had a third visit to be checked out. She was okay and given tablets to calm her stomach. I’m glad to say that Ruby is steadily improving and gradually getting her wag back<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our worst ever tomato crop – only produced tiny tomatoes<\/h3>

This video was taken over a couple of days during the last week. Something strange has happened with our tomato crop this year. The tomatoes that have been produced are unlike the ones I’d normally expect to be produced by varieties I’ve grown for many years.
