It was also our first visit since storm Jocelyn so we had a quick look around to see if we had any damage.<\/p><p>Fortunately, we were damage free although once again our plot neighbour&#8217;s greenhouse had rolled onto our plot so the first job was to return it to the adjacent allotment. It was time to cut back our hazel tree which we coppice every few years for bean poles and pea sticks. It\u2019s a job that needs doing before any birds decide to use the tree for nesting. I didn\u2019t expect much of them as they were planted in the middle of May which I consider very late for parsnips. You\u2019ll see I was wrong. The grounds had been closed due to the gale force winds of a few weeks ago. The main problem was that the gales had blown over some trees. We also needed to see if we could find a few fresh vegetables. The wind had blown the covers from the brassicas and removed some weed control fabric but there was no damage to our shed or greenhouse. We decided to dig up some parsnips and leeks. The parsnips were chitted on damp paper and we thought that some had grown long roots before we planted them. We&#8217;ve had lots of rain during the last couple of weeks of December. At this time of year, the ground takes a long time to dry out.
