A surprise giant parsnip – so sowing seed on damp kitchen paper really does work 4k<\/h3>

We paid a visit to the allotment at the weekend to harvest a few vegetables. I wasn’t convinced from harvesting a few parsnips last week that sowing seed on a damp kitchen towel was effective. However, after lifting an absolute giant of a parsnip root this weekend I think this method really does work.<\/p>

Ruby does some shopping & visits the vets and park 4k<\/h3>

We had to collect Ruby’s monthly Nextguard Tablet from the vets and also do a little bit of shopping. Ruby had a walk with us down into town. We managed a walk around the track in the park so Ruby could have a run around a stretch her legs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Parsnip reveal and lifting first leeks of the season 4k<\/h3>

In the spring we decided to try sowing our parsnips on damp kitchen paper inside. The parsnips germinated well and were sown in shallow compost filled trenches at the allotment. My main doubt was whether the parsnips would form a single root or would the root be damaged when the tiny seedlings were transplanted. In any case, the parsnips grew well all through summer so it was now time to find out if they had indeed produced a proper parsnip root.<\/p>

Bringing in the dahlias and a surprise harvest<\/h3>

I\u2019d normally wait for a frost to blacken the dahlia stems before lifting them for winter storage but decided to lift and store them this year before they get frosted. I was expecting the ground to be very wet after all the rain of the last few weeks but luckily that wasn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Come on a walk with Ruby around a partly flooded Nostell Priory<\/h3>

We took Ruby for a walk at Nostell Priory. After all the rain of the last few weeks, we thought it might be a little bit wet. Some of our regular paths were flooded, not to any great depth, but enough to make Ruby reluctant to walk through the water. We had to make a few detours but eventually got almost to the obelisk at the top end of the large meadow. Ruby was in need of a wash and brush up by the time we arrived home.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Storing carrots & beetroot over winter 2 different ways<\/h3>

I\u2019m always on the lookout for different ways of storing vegetables over winter. Last year I stored carrots and beetroot in old recycling crates filled with old compost. I haven\u2019t got enough old compost to do the same thing again so I\u2019m trying a couple of different ways.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
