Winston potato reveal on our unkempt plot<\/h3>

It’s got to that time of the year when the plot begins to empty rather than being planted up. I decided to lift our Winston first early potatoes to get the process started.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our tomatoes are coming on a treat<\/h3>

A look at how our tomatoes are growing at home and in the allotment. In both the garden and allotment we have tomatoes growing in the greenhouse and outside. We are still waiting for our first ripe tomatoes of the season. It looks like Sungold will be the first to ripen in the allotment greenhouse.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At last some rain – but how much?<\/h3>

We’ve been needing some rain for weeks now and at last, we’ve had some. It’s come in the way of showers rather than a spell of prolonged rain. I think we’ve had more rain at home than in the garden at home. However, the weather continues showery so watering at the allotment is on hold.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A double potato reveal – Winston & Casablanca<\/h3>

We\u2019ve already lifted some of our Ulster Prince first early potatoes. \ufffcAs the remaining roots are growing with borage which the bees adore I decided to try some Winston first early potatoes. These weren\u2019t as good as Ulster Prince and after giving it a bit of thought we decided to try our third early potato variety Casablanca. Having lifted all three varieties I think Ulster Prince has produced the best crop.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Gooseberries & gales<\/h3>

After a lovely spell of weather in June, July has started off with gale force winds. \ufffc\ufffc At the allotment we have a gooseberry bush which performs really well even though it\u2019s inundated with Kiwi leaves. Videoing opportunities at the weekend we are limited by the gale force winds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

First early potato reveal and harvesting winter onions<\/h3>

We needed to lift a few more potatoes to use in the kitchen. This year we have 3 varieties of early potatoes, Ulster Prince which we are lifting along with Casablanca and Winston. I might lift a couple of roots of Winston next. All our first early potatoes are ready for lifting as the foliage is starting to turn brown suggesting they’ve done all the growing they are going to do. Sue lifted our over wintering onions. Radar has produced a better looking crop than Senshyu Yellow but usually, there is nothing to choose between the two varieties.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
