The proverb can be traced as far back as 1732. Clout is an old English word for clothing and I\u2019ve always understood the saying to mean never cast aside any items of winter clothing until the May blossom is out.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-994 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_1164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_1164.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_1164-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, the May blossom or hawthorn blossom is certainly out but you certainly don\u2019t want to be casting any clouts. Now the thing is there\u2019s always been some doubt about whether the proverb refers to May blossom or the month of May. Perhaps this year has proved the point that the proverb really does refer to the month and not May blossom as this year with the blossom in full flower you certainly needed all your winter clouts.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-995 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_1165.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_1165.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/IMG_1165-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through Sunday the temperature gradually fell from around 14\u00b0C at midnight on Saturday to 3\u00b0C by midnight on Sunday. There was a cool north easterly wind blowing too.\u00a0 The lowest temperature in the early hours of Monday morning was 1.6\u00b0C and on Tuesday morning was 1.3\u00b0C.
