May has started off a little bit on the cool side.<\/p>

As you can see a couple of early mornings got down to around the 4\u00b0C (39\u00b0F) mark. That’s a little too close to getting a frost for my liking, especially as I always think it’s a bit colder at the allotment than at home. Hopefully, there wasn’t a frost to brown our newly emerging potato shoots and blacken the strawberry flowers.<\/div>

Rather worrying for gardeners there\u2019s a suggestion from some of the weather models that we might be in for some cold nights as we move through the weekend and into the early part of next week.<\/div>

As it\u2019s May hopefully it won\u2019t be exceptionally cold but with temperatures forecast to fall as low as 3\u00b0C\u00a0 (37\u00b0F) or lower a frost can\u2019t be ruled out. I’ve posted the forecast from the GEM model but both the ECMWF and GFS models are forecasting much the same at the minute. Any tender plants might need a bit of protection. I\u2019ll have to make sure that any potatoes at the allotment that have young shoots are either earthed up or given some other form of protection.\u00a0<\/div>

We might have to try to cover our strawberry flowers with some fleece. The odd thing is it’s forecast to be nice and warm up to the weekend and then turn suddenly distinctly chilly.<\/div>
