This year they were picked at the beginning of October.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2550\" src=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/P1220702-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/P1220702-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/P1220702-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/P1220702-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/P1220702.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>They are a little bit different from all our other fruit in that they cannot be eaten raw.\u00a0 The fruits only soften on cooking and are delicious added to apples or eaten on their own. However, we do have another fruit, growing on a tree in the garden, which is still to be picked.<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2548\" src=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_E2148-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_E2148-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_E2148-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_E2148-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ossettweather.com\/gardening2020\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_E2148.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p><p>These are medlars and the fruits are still very firm. The fruits have to blet before they can be eaten. I&#8217;m not sure whether the fruits are best left on the tree for this to happen or whether they should be removed and stored inside until they soften. I&#8217;ve read that once softened the fruit tastes a little bit citrusy but to be honest, we&#8217;ve never got that far. I find it very difficult to tell difference between bletting and rotting.
